  1. First of all - welcome to the class!!! Yay!!! (Also, your viola is uber cool. Kept meaning to tell you that, but I usually only remember during orchestra - when I see you - and it's a bit awkward yelling to you over from the firsts' section. Not that people like Savannah don't do it all the time. Umm... I'm rambling now....)

Okay - going down the line here.

The first one is good: It's saved from being just another boring, middle-of-the-page portrait by the cool color scheme (love the contrast between yellow and blue! So much better than orange and blue, even though orange and blue is the actual complimentary/contrasting/whatever pair as dictated by the color wheel). The expression is captured pretty well and your technical skill seems pretty solid (the left side of the jaw line looks a bit funky, but benefit of the doubt says that people have funky jawlines naturally and that I am totally not the one to judge). The values around the left eye could be pushed a bit more, to match with the rest of the piece, but overall I like it.

#2 - FIERCE!!! Is it a lion or a dog? I can't tell! Does it really matter? No! Why? Because it's FIERCE!!!!!!! And it makes me want to roar.
The area over the nose is a bit jumbled, but it's not overly distracting.

#3 - OMG, I should tell you about my concentration. (But later, I've rambled enough here.) Anyways, I might be a bit biased, but I don't see anything that really stands out in a not good way. I love it.

#4 - Meh. I recognize that this is a sketchbook thing, but.... The previous three were all kinda exciting, but this boring. The blue wash does nothing to add to the picture. The face is smack dab in the middle. I like the style of the face - it reminds me of illustrations in storybooks - but there's nothing more to the picture.

#5 - Not sure if I can tell what that is, but whatever it is the value is done really well.

So... cool. Nice talking to you, one-sided though it was. Um.
I can't wait to see your actual concentration pieces.

  2. Welcome to the class also! It's great to see what your work is like considering everyone in her pretty much knows what everyone else's is like. As a whole all of these pieces are strong but you can see there are definitely two very different styles that you use. The two that jump out at me are the lion and the chicken? These both share a quality of spontaneity or flow (but also care) were the others only don't. Great work, i'm excited to see more

  4. Contrary to popular belief I really like the sketchbook.
But then again I really like all of your art. I don't know if you're looking into art college but your work shares a lot of the graphic qualities of the pieces in brochures. Its "yummy" as McBride would say. But it just sounds weir when I say it. How about great? Does that work. Your work is great. Good job, Can't wait to see this month's projects!

  5. You have such an individual style! It's cool to look at 5 extremely different pieces, but still feel some cohesiveness between them. Looking forward to seeing more art from you!
